How to write it

  • Say you are sorry, simply. "I am so sorry for your loss" is enough to start.
  • Name the person who died if you can. Hearing their name is a comfort to most families.
  • Share one small memory if you have one: a laugh, a habit, a kindness.
  • Offer something specific instead of "let me know if you need anything": a meal, a ride, mowing the lawn.
  • Keep it short. Two to four sentences is plenty.

What to avoid

  • "Everything happens for a reason" or "They are in a better place": comforting to some, painful to others. Only use faith language if you know they share it.
  • "I know how you feel." Every loss is different.
  • Comparing their loss with your own, or asking how the person died.
  • Telling them how to grieve, or that they should be feeling better by now.
